Integrated Micro Gas Chromatographs with High-Flow Knudsen Pumps.

Environmental gas sensing typically requires both sensitivity and specificity; target vapor species must not only be detected and quantified, but also differentiated from interferents. This mission can be accomplished by micro gas chromatographs (μGCs), which allow preconcentration of samples and subsequent separation of complex vapor mixtures into individual constituents by their specific retention times. This thesis focuses on the system-level design, fabrication, and integration of μGCs, with the ultimate goal of fully microfabricated systems that can be easily manufactured and distributed to end-users. This thesis also explores the optimization of a micro gas pump – a critical μGC component, and generally recognized as a challenge for microsystems. Three generations of integrated µGC systems have been designed, fabricated, and evaluated. The iGC1 system demonstrates the feasibility of a low-cost three-mask fabrication approach for a µGC including a Knudsen pump, a preconcentrator, a separation column and a microdischarge-based detector, which are integrated in a 4-cc stack. The iGC2 system demonstrates a valveless µGC architecture, in which a bi-directional Knudsen pump provides reversible gas flow for (multi-stage) preconcentrators, which is essential for quantitative analysis. The iGC3 system replaces the microdischarge-based detectors in iGC1 and iGC2 with complementary capacitive detectors, facilitating a purely electronic interface for the fluidics. Additionally, it is compatible with the use of room air as the carrier gas. The quantitative analysis of 19 chemicals with concentration levels of well below 100 ppb is demonstrated, showing the promise of automated, continuous monitoring of indoor air pollutants. The pumps used in the iGCx systems are Knudsen pumps that use thermal transpiration provided by nanoporous media and have no moving parts. This thesis also describes an exploratory effort in which lithographically fabricated channels in silicon substrates provide the thermal transpiration. The Si-micromachined Knudsen pumps demonstrate >200 sccm flow rate. To increase the output pressure head, these pumps are arrayed in series, using both a stacked configuration and a planar one. The results show that the pressure and flow characteristics can be tailored over a wide performance range, extending the possible applications beyond µGC systems.PhDElectrical EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. MobiPlay: A Remote Execution Based Record-and-Replay Tool for Mobile Applications

The record-and-replay approach for software testing is important and valuable for developers in designing mobile applications. However, the existing solutions for recording and replaying Android applications are far from perfect. When considering the richness of mobile phones\u27 input capabilities including touch screen, sensors, GPS, etc., existing approaches either fall short of covering all these different input types, or require elevated privileges that are not easily attained and can be dangerous. In this paper, we present a novel system, called MobiPlay, which aims to improve record-and-replay testing. By collaborating between a mobile phone and a server, we are the first to capture all possible inputs by doing so at the application layer, instead of at the Android framework layer or the Linux kernel layer, which would be infeasible without a server. MobiPlay runs the to-be-tested application on the server under exactly the same environment as the mobile phone, and displays the GUI of the application in real time on a thin client application installed on the mobile phone. From the perspective of the mobile phone user, the application appears to be local. We have implemented our system and evaluated it with tens of popular mobile applications showing that MobiPlay is efficient, flexible, and comprehensive. It can record all input data, including all sensor data, all touchscreen gestures, and GPS. It is able to record and replay on both the mobile phone and the server. Furthermore, it is suitable for both white-box and black-box testing

Superconducting fluctuations and charge-4ee plaquette state at strong coupling

Recent experiments indicate that superconducting fluctuations also play an important role in overdoped cuprates. Here we apply the static auxiliary field Monte Carlo approach to study phase correlations of the pairing fields in a microscopic model with spin-singlet pairing interaction. We find that the short- and long-range phase correlations are well captured by the phase mutual information, which allows us to construct a theoretical phase diagram containing the uniform dd-wave superconducting region, the phase fluctuating region, the local pairing region, and the disordered region. We show that the gradual development of phase coherence has a number of consequences on spectroscopic measurements, such as the development of the Fermi arc and the anisotropy in the angle-resolved spectra, scattering rate, entropy, specific heat, and quasiparticle dispersion, in good agreement with experimental observations. For strong coupling, our Monte Carlo simulation reveals an unexpected charge-4ee plaquette state with dd-wave bonds, which competes with the uniform dd-wave superconductivity and exhibits a U-shaped density of states

Data-Efficient Image Quality Assessment with Attention-Panel Decoder

Blind Image Quality Assessment (BIQA) is a fundamental task in computer vision, which however remains unresolved due to the complex distortion conditions and diversified image contents. To confront this challenge, we in this paper propose a novel BIQA pipeline based on the Transformer architecture, which achieves an efficient quality-aware feature representation with much fewer data. More specifically, we consider the traditional fine-tuning in BIQA as an interpretation of the pre-trained model. In this way, we further introduce a Transformer decoder to refine the perceptual information of the CLS token from different perspectives. This enables our model to establish the quality-aware feature manifold efficiently while attaining a strong generalization capability. Meanwhile, inspired by the subjective evaluation behaviors of human, we introduce a novel attention panel mechanism, which improves the model performance and reduces the prediction uncertainty simultaneously. The proposed BIQA method maintains a lightweight design with only one layer of the decoder, yet extensive experiments on eight standard BIQA datasets (both synthetic and authentic) demonstrate its superior performance to the state-of-the-art BIQA methods, i.e., achieving the SRCC values of 0.875 (vs. 0.859 in LIVEC) and 0.980 (vs. 0.969 in LIVE).Comment: Accepted by AAAI 202

Spermidine enhances heat tolerance of rice seeds during mid-filling stage and promote subsequent seed germination

IntroductionHeat stress is a vital factor which restricts rice seed quality and yield. However, the response mechanism to heat stress in the mid filling stage of rice seed is unclear.MethodsIn the present study we integrated phenotypic analysis with biochemical, hormone, and gene expression analysis in order to explore technologies for improving rice seeds heat tolerance and subsequent seed germination.ResultsSpermidine (Spd) application effectively alleviated the damage of heat stress treatment during mid-filling stage (HTM, 12-20 days after pollination) on seed development, promoted subsequent seed germination and seedlings establishment. Spd significantly increased seed dry weight, starch and amylose contents during seed development under heat stress, and improved seed germinate, seedlings establishment and seedling characteristics during germination time. Biochemical analysis indicated that, HTM significantly decreased the activities of several starch synthase enzymes and led to a decrease in starch content. While Spd treatment significantly enhanced the activities of ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylas and granule-bound starch synthase, as well as the corresponding-genes expressions in HTM rice seeds, resulting in the increases of amylose and total starch contents. In addition, Spd significantly increased the catalase and glutathione reductase activities together with corresponding-genes expressions, and lowered the overaccumulation of H2O2 and malondialdehyde in HTM seeds. In the subsequent seed germination process, HTM+Spd seeds exhibited dramatically up-regulated levels of soluble sugars, glucose, ATP and energy charges. Consistently, HTM+Spd seeds showed significantly increased of α-amylose and α-glucosidase activities as well as corresponding-genes expressions during early germination. Moreover, HTM evidently increased the abscisic acid (ABA) content, decreased the gibberellin (GA) content, and accordingly significantly declined the GA/ABA ratio during early rice seeds germination. However, Spd treatment did not significantly affect the metabolism of GA and ABA in seed germination stage.DiscussionThe present study suggested that Spd treatment could effectively alleviate the negative impact of HTM on seed development and the subsequent seed germination, which might be closely correlated with starch synthesis and antioxidant defense during seed filling period, starch decomposition and energy supply in seed germination period
